Day County, situated in the northeastern part of South Dakota, was created in 1879 from a portion of the Great Dakota Territory. It is named after Merritt H. Day, a pioneer lawyer, and legislator who played a significant role in the settlement and development of the region. The county's total land area covers approximately 637 square miles.

Webster, the largest city within Day County, serves as its county seat. The region predominantly comprises rural settlements with a strong emphasis on agriculture as the primary economic activity. Farmers cultivate vast areas of crops including corn, soybeans, and wheat, making the county a vital contributor to South Dakota's agricultural sector.

Although largely rural, Day County has an assortment of recreational offerings, with particular emphasis on its scenic lakes. Waubay National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1935, is a popular destination, attracting bird watchers, hunters, and nature enthusiasts. The 4,650-acre refuge aims to preserve and enhance migratory bird, fish, and native wildlife habitats in the Prairie Pothole Region.

One fun fact about this region is that the community of Andover, located in Day County, is home to the world's first high-density polyethylene (HDPE) road. In 1961, the town fought against being forgotten after the construction of a new highway bypassed it. Andover wanted a durable, weather-resistant road to help keep their community on the map, which led them to choose HDPE plastic road material. This unique road, known as the Andover Mile, still stands today and symbolizes the endurance of small-town America.
