Dewey County, located in the great state of South Dakota, was established on March 8, 1883, and named in honor of Admiral George Dewey, a prominent figure in the Spanish-American War. The county, part of the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation, is primarily an agricultural and ranching community.

The county seat is Timber Lake, founded in 1910 when the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul, and Pacific railroad expanded westward. Historically, the economy of Dewey County has been tied to agriculture, with cattle and grain farming being the predominant industries. The area has also been home to the Lakota Sioux tribe for generations, with several settlements existing before the establishment of the reservation.

A fun fact about Dewey County is that it is home to the Little Moreau River, which offers beautiful views and recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike. The river flows through the northern part of the county, providing a hub for outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, and camping.
