Edmunds County is situated in the northeastern part of South Dakota and was founded on April 12, 1883. It was named after Rev. J. L. Edmunds, who was a state legislator at the time. The county's history is rooted in the expansion of homesteading and agriculture in the late 19th and early 20th century. A major contributing factor to the growth of the county was the arrival of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad in the 1880s, which connected Edmunds County to the larger transportation network and facilitated the movement of goods and people.

The county seat, Ipswich, was founded in 1883 by William A. H. Lovett, who named the community after his hometown of Ipswich, Massachusetts. Agriculture has always been the primary industry in Edmunds County, with the fertile land producing a variety of crops and supporting livestock operations. In the early days, settlers primarily raised wheat, corn, and oats, while the livestock primarily comprised cattle, sheep, and pigs.

A fun fact about Edmunds County is that it is home to the Edmunds County Museum Complex, which features preserved buildings and artifacts that take visitors on a journey through the area's past. The complex includes a schoolhouse, country church, blacksmith shop, and several other buildings that showcase the way of life in the region during its early years. Additionally, visitors can experience the Ipswich Trail Days, an annual event held in June, which celebrates the town's history and heritage with parades, live music, and various fun-filled activities.
