Grant County is located in the northeastern part of the great state of South Dakota. Established on January 8, 1873, the county was named in honor of Ulysses S. Grant, an American military leader and the 18th President of the United States. The county's seat and largest city is Milbank, which itself was established in 1880 along the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul, and Pacific Railroad.

Early settlers in Grant County were primarily of German, Norwegian, and Swedish descent, and many of them engaged in farming and agriculture. The county's fertile land was conducive to growing crops such as wheat, corn, and barley. The agriculture-focused economy was further supported by the creation of the South Dakota State University Agricultural Experiment Station in 1887, which facilitated research and education in the field.

Today, Grant County continues to rely primarily on agriculture, along with manufacturing and healthcare services. It offers outdoor recreational opportunities such as fishing, hunting, boating, and birdwatching, thanks to its abundant lakes and natural areas.

Fun Fact: Grant County is home to the "Song to the Great Spirit" building, an impressive historic structure built in 1924 by famous architect Bernard L. Green. Located on the east shore of Big Stone Lake, the building features a unique blend of Egyptian Revival and our Deco architectural styles. Initially, it served as a meeting place for a fraternal secret society and later was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
