Gregory County, located in the southern part of the great state of South Dakota, was established on May 8, 1862, as a part of the Dakota Territory. However, the county was not organized until 1898. It was named in honor of John A. Gregory, a prominent citizen who played a key role in its organization. Gregory County covers an area of approximately 1,041 square miles and is bordered by the Missouri River to the east.

The area was primarily inhabited by the Yankton Sioux Tribe before European settlers began to arrive in the late 1800s. The Homestead Act, passed in May 1862, allowed these settlers to acquire land by simply paying a small fee, and this attracted a significant number of people to the region.

Agriculture has played a major role in the development of Gregory County, with wheat, corn, and livestock being mainstays of the local economy. As the county's population grew, several towns were established, including the county seat of Burke, named after South Dakota's ninth governor, Charles H. Burke. Other prominent towns in Gregory County include Bonesteel, Gregory, Dallas, and Herrick.

Now for a fun fact: One of the must-see attractions in Gregory County is the annual South Central Threshing Show held in Dallas. Since the 1980s, visitors from various regions have attended this event to witness antique machinery demonstrations and learn about the fascinating history of farming in the region. This includes a fun-filled weekend of tractor pulling, live music, and delicious homemade food - providing a fantastic opportunity for both locals and visitors alike to connect with the agricultural heritage of Gregory County.
