Haakon County is located in the great state of South Dakota and was established in 1914. The county was named after King Haakon VII of Norway, who was immensely popular among the Scandinavian settlers in the region at the time. The county seat is in the city of Philip, named after the famous cattleman and entrepreneur James "Scotty" Philip, who played an essential role in saving the American bison from extinction.

The area of Haakon County was initially Native American territory, particularly inhabited by the Sioux Nation. However, the land was later acquired by the United States through the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Settlers began to arrive in the region during the late 19th century due to the expansion of the railroad and the Homestead Act of 1862, which granted lands to pioneers for farming and development.

The rural county's economy mainly relies on agriculture, particularly the cultivation of wheat and other grains, as well as cattle ranching.

A fun fact about Haakon County is the claim that the "town" of Mirage Flats, which is not an official town, is the center of the universe. There is a sign on Highway 248 that humorously points to Mirage Flats and reads, "Center of the Universe: Next Right."
