Hamlin County is located in the northeastern part of the great state of South Dakota. Established on January 8, 1873, and organized in 1878, the county was named in honor of Hannibal Hamlin, who served as Vice President under Abraham Lincoln during his first term in office. In the beginning, the county was initially a part of the Dakota Territory before South Dakota gained statehood on November 2, 1889.

The county seat, which is the administrative center of Hamlin County, is the city of Hayti. The city holds a special significance as it was named after Hayti, Missouri, which in turn was named so by its founders inspired by the Haitian revolution.

Hamlin County has a rich agricultural history, with fertile land that supports the growth of crops such as corn, soybeans, and wheat. In addition to agriculture, the county has also had a notable presence in the livestock industry, particularly in cattle and hog farming.

One fun fact about Hamlin County is that it is home to Lake Poinsett, the second-largest natural lake in South Dakota.
