Hanson County is located in the southeastern region of the great state of South Dakota. It was established on January 8, 1873, and named after Joseph R. Hanson, the clerk of the first legislature in the territory of Dakota. At the time of its establishment, the county's boundaries included much larger territories, but later adjustments in 1874 and 1880 reduced it to its current size.

Mitchell, the nearest city to Hanson County, serves as its unofficial gateway. The county seat is located in the town of Alexandria, which was founded in 1879. The primary industries in the region have traditionally been agriculture and livestock farming, with a focus on crops like corn, soybeans, and wheat. This has given rise to a strong rural community and small-town charm.

Fun Fact: Hanson County is home to Prehistoric Indian Village, an archaeological site near Lake Mitchell. This site is a National Historic Landmark that contains remains of an ancient Native American village dating back to approximately 1,000 years ago. Excavations and research at the site have provided valuable information about the way of life, tools, and culture of the Native Americans who lived there.
