Harding County, located in the northwestern region of the great state of South Dakota, was established on July 5, 1909. It was named in honor of J.A. Harding, who had been the speaker of the South Dakota State House of Representatives. The county's land was originally a part of the larger Butte and Lawrence Counties before it was organized and given its current borders.

Harding County is known for its significant ranching and farming industries, contributing to the state's agricultural economy. The local economy has also seen some growth in the areas of tourism, hunting, and outdoor recreation.

A fun fact about this region is that Harding County is home to the Slim Buttes, a group of badlands that are famous for the discovery of numerous dinosaur fossils, specifically dating back to the late Cretaceous period. The area has provided paleontologists with many valuable insights into prehistoric life in the region. One of the most notable discoveries in Slim Buttes is a Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton known as "Sue," which is currently displayed at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago.
