Hughes County, located in the great state of South Dakota, was established on January 8, 1873. Named in honor of Alexander Hughes, an early legislator and prominent businessman, the county is situated in the central part of the state. It covers an area of approximately 801 square miles, with the state capital, Pierre, serving as the county seat.

From its early days, the area had been inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Arikara and the Sioux. The establishment of Fort Pierre in 1832 brought trade and settlement opportunities in the region, followed by the influx of European-American settlers during the late 19th century with the advent of railroad development.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, agriculture and livestock became the prominent industries in Hughes County, and these sectors remain economically significant today. Additionally, the Oahe Dam, built in the mid-20th century, has since given rise to tourism, recreation, and hydroelectric power generation.

One fun fact about Hughes County in South Dakota is that the county seat, Pierre, is one of the few cities in the United States that doesn't have a riverfront but still serves as a state capital. The city is situated on a series of bluffs overlooking the Missouri River, offering picturesque views and a unique landscape.
