Hutchinson County, located in the great state of South Dakota, was created in 1862 and officially organized on April 21, 1871. Named after John Hutchinson, an early Dakota Territory legislator, the county is situated in the southeastern part of South Dakota and spans an area of approximately 814 square miles. Its county seat is Olivet, a small town with a rich history in the region.

The area was primarily inhabited by the Yankton Sioux tribe before European-American settlers arrived, with the Lewis and Clark expedition passing through the region in the early 1800s. After the passage of the Homestead Act in 1862, a wave of European immigrants, including Germans, Norwegians, and Czechs, were drawn to the fertile lands of the county. These settlers established family farms and small towns, and farming and agriculture have continued to be dominant industries in Hutchinson County throughout its history.

One fun fact about Hutchinson County is the annual celebration of "Czech Days," which takes place in the town of Tabor. This event has been celebrated since 1949 and showcases the unique Czech heritage and culture of the local residents, including traditional music, dance, costumes, and food.

Overall, Hutchinson County offers a rich historical tapestry and continues to celebrate its diverse cultural roots.
