Hyde County is located in the great state of South Dakota and was officially established in 1873. The county got its name in honor of James Hyde, an early resident and Dakota Territory legislator. The area has its roots in agriculture and livestock rearing, with these industries remaining vital to the local economy to this day.

The county seat, Highmore, was founded in 1882 by Charles H. Prior, who played an important role in developing the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad. Highmore was known as a shipping point for the shipping of grain and livestock by rail. The railroad contributed significantly to the growth and development of the county, bringing new settlers and economic opportunities.

Hyde County has maintained much of its rural charm, with the agricultural way of life ingrained in its history and culture. One fun fact about this region of the USA is that Hyde County, specifically Highmore, is home to the world's largest pheasant statue! This 28-foot-tall structure, named "Freddie the Pheasant," symbolizes the popularity of pheasant hunting in the area and stands as an iconic landmark, representing the pride of the community in their local heritage.
