Jerauld County is situated in the great state of South Dakota, a largely rural region in the Midwestern United States. Established in 1873 and named after H. J. Jerauld, a local legislator, the county was officially organized in 1881. Its county seat is Wessington Springs, named for the beautiful nearby springs.

An important part of South Dakota's rich history, Jerauld County is predominantly an agricultural area. Initially settled by pioneers and homesteaders, the county significantly benefited from the expansion of the railroad in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The railroad connected the region, allowed for easier transportation of goods, and acted as the catalyst for Jerauld County's development.

A fun fact about Jerauld County is that it is home to the Shakespeare Garden and Anne Hathaway Cottage. The garden, established in 1927, represents the flora mentioned in Shakespeare's plays, sonnets, and songs, serving as a living tribute to literary history. The Anne Hathaway Cottage, a replica of the one found in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, is located on the same grounds as the garden, giving visitors a unique cultural and educational experience in the heart of South Dakota.
