Jones County, located in the great state of South Dakota, was established in 1916 and named after George Wallace Jones, a prominent US Senator from Iowa and a settler in the region. It is part of the Sioux Falls, South Dakota Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county encompasses a total area of 971 square miles, with the majority of it being land and just 0.5 square miles of water.

Jones County is situated on the western edge of the historic Missouri Plateau, where early settlers were primarily drawn to cattle ranching and homesteading opportunities in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The region features a mix of flat prairie lands and rolling hills with a significant agriculture presence, primarily focused on livestock production and growing crops such as corn, wheat, and sunflowers.

The county seat and largest city is Murdo, which was founded in 1907 as a stop along the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul, and Pacific Railroad. Murdo serves as a commercial center for the primarily rural population of the county.

One fun fact about Jones County is that it houses the Pioneer Auto Show, a classic automobile museum in Murdo, which has been a popular tourist attraction since 1954. The museum showcases over 275 vintage vehicles, including cars, motorcycles, and tractors, as well as an extensive collection of Americana memorabilia. Visitors can step back in time and explore the history of transportation and American culture at this unique attraction.
