Kingsbury County, located in the great state of South Dakota, was officially established on February 2, 1880. It was named after George W. Kingsbury and T. A. Kingsbury, two brothers who contributed significantly to the early development and political organization of the Dakota Territory. The county's original boundaries were defined by Governor Nehemiah G. Ordway and the Territorial Legislature.

In the late 1800s, the railroad industry expanded through the region, which pushed population growth and sought agricultural development. The area transformed into a prosperous agricultural hub, with farming being the primary economic activity even till today. The county seat, De Smet, was named after Father Pierre-Jean De Smet, a Jesuit Missionary dedicated to establishing peaceful relations between white settlers and Native Americans.

A fun fact about this region is that it was the setting for five of the classic "Little House" children's novels by renowned author Laura Ingalls Wilder. The real-life Ingalls family was among the early settlers in De Smet, and Wilder's growing up years in Kingsbury County served as an inspiration for her stories. Today, tourists can visit several landmarks in De Smet, including the Ingalls' homestead, which have been preserved and offers insight into the lives of the pioneer family as well as the historical background of the county.
