Lincoln County, located in the southeastern part of South Dakota, was established on January 8, 1862, and organized on May 30, 1867. Interestingly, it was named after President Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States. The county covers approximately 577 square miles and is bordered by Union County to the east, Clay County to the south, Turner County to the west, and Minnehaha County to the north. Its largest city and county seat is Canton.

Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, Lincoln County remained primarily an agricultural region, with numerous small family-run farms dotting the landscape. The area saw significant growth after the construction of the Great Northern Railway and the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul, and Pacific Railroad, which created a strong transportation network for agricultural products and passenger travel.

As the 20th century progressed, Lincoln County experienced development and expansion, becoming more industrialized and urbanized. Highway systems and urban infrastructure were improved, attracting industries, businesses, and residents from other parts of the state.

Although much of Lincoln County still retains its agricultural heritage, it has become one of the fastest-growing counties in South Dakota due to its location and proximity to cities like Sioux Falls, South Dakota's largest city.
