Marshall County is located in the northeastern part of the great state of South Dakota. It was established on February 2, 1873, and named after Marshall Vincent, a secretary of the Dakota Territory from 1872 to 1874. The county seat is Britton, which became the county seat in 1885, replacing the original seat - the now-abandoned village of Dayton.

The first settlers in the region were mainly cattle ranchers and farmers attracted to the fertile soil and proximity to the James River. The expansion of the railroad in the late 19th century led to a growth in population and economic development, as the transport of goods such as grain became easier.

The vast majority of the county is agricultural, primarily dedicated to cultivating crops such as corn, soybeans, and wheat. The region has also been involved in the production of sunflower seeds and flax as well. Livestock farming, specifically cattle, also contributes to the local economy.

One fun fact about Marshall County is the presence of the Fort Sisseton Historic State Park. Originally known as Fort Wadsworth, the military outpost was built in 1864 to protect European settlers in the area during conflicts with the Dakota Sioux tribes. It was renamed in 1876 to honor the Sisseton tribe of the Dakota. Today, the park is home to several well-preserved historic buildings, providing visitors with a glimpse into the life and architecture of 19th-century military forts.
