McCook County, located in the great state of South Dakota, was established on January 8, 1873. The county was named in honor of Brigadier General Edward M. McCook, a Union cavalry commander during the Civil War and later, a distinguished public servant during the Reconstruction era. The county was mainly established for land speculations, and settlers started arriving in the late 1870s.

The county seat, Salem, was founded in 1880 when the railroad was extended to that point. Agriculture has been the lifeblood of McCook County, with fertile soils contributing to the growth of crops and livestock farming. Today, the county primarily produces corn, soybeans, alfalfa, wheat, and hogs, reflecting its rich agricultural heritage that has persisted through the years.

A fun fact about McCook County is that it is home to "Chautauqua Park," which is a historical site established in the early 1900s. The Park was used for religious and social gatherings, and it was part of the national Chautauqua Movement, which provided education, culture, and entertainment at large outdoor gatherings in rural America. The word "Chautauqua" is of Iroquois origin and refers to a series of adult education programs held in the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
