McPherson County, located in the great state of South Dakota, was established on January 8, 1873, and named in honor of General James Birdseye McPherson, a Civil War general who served under Union General Ulysses S. Grant. The county is situated in the northern part of the state and covers an area of approximately 1,152 square miles.

The region was initially inhabited by the Sioux tribe, who called the territory home before European settlers arrived. The arrival of the American settlers was accompanied by an influx of German-Russian immigrants. Many of these settlers were of the Mennonite and Evangelical Lutheran faith, which influenced the region's cultural and religious identity.

In the late 1800s, agriculture played a significant role in the development of McPherson County, with the construction of the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad further promoting the region's growth. This railroad led to the establishment of various towns in the county, including its largest settlement, Leola, which became the county seat in 1888.

McPherson County remains primarily agricultural today, with farming and ranching representing its primary economic activities. It has experienced depopulation in recent years, a trend seen in many rural areas throughout the United States.

One fun fact about McPherson County is that it has more lakes than any other county in South Dakota, with over a thousand lakes scattered throughout the region. This makes it an attractive destination for fishing, boating, and other water-based recreational activities.
