Meade County, located in the western region of the great state of South Dakota, covers an area of about 3,483 square miles. The county was established on February 22, 1889, and was named after Fort Meade, which in turn was named after General George G. Meade, a Union Army officer in the Civil War who played a major role in the Battle of Gettysburg.

The region was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Sioux, but settlers began to migrate to the area during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The construction of the Fort Meade cavalry post in 1878 helped establish the region and contributed to its growth. When the Black Hills gold rush began in the 1870s, many miners were attracted to Meade County, bringing industry and commerce to the area.

Today, Meade County is characterized by its rural landscape, featuring vast expanses of grassland and numerous ranches. It is also known for the famous town of Sturgis, which hosts the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally that attracts hundreds of thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts from across the country.

A fun fact about Meade County is that the Bear Butte State Park, a sacred site for many Native American tribes, is located within its borders. The park is home to Bear Butte, a geological formation formed millions of years ago by volcanic activity. It is considered a sacred place for several Native American tribes, including the Cheyenne and Sioux who conduct religious ceremonies at the site to this day.
