Miner County, located in the great state of South Dakota, was officially established on March 2, 1883, after being named for Nelson Miner and Ephraim Miner. These two individuals played an essential role in the area's history as they were both integral members of the Dakota territorial legislature. The county is situated in the eastern part of the state and covers an area of approximately 572 square miles.

The region was primarily settled by European immigrants who pursued agriculture, given the fertile soil in the area. Many of these settlers were of German, Norwegian, and Irish descent. Agriculture remains the backbone of Miner County's economy even today, with a primary focus on crops such as corn, soybeans, and wheat, as well as raising cattle and hogs.

An interesting fun fact about Miner County is the presence of the Annual Old Settler's Day, celebrated in the town of Howard, the county seat. This longstanding tradition gathers the community together every summer to celebrate the region's history and culture with parades, including a Kiddie and Grand Parade, festivities, and other family-friendly activities. This event serves as a reminder of the county's heritage and a tribute to those early settlers who helped shape Miner County.

Furthermore, the county is also proud of its Howard Railroad Depot, which operated from the early 1900s until the 1960s. Today, it has been restored as a museum displaying artifacts and photos significant to the vibrant history of Miner County and its railroad connections.
