Minnehaha County is located in the southeastern part of the great state of South Dakota. The county was created on April 5, 1862 and officially organized on June 4, 1868. The name "Minnehaha" is derived from a Dakota Sioux word, meaning "laughing waters," which refers to the beautiful Minnehaha Falls in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The county is home to Sioux Falls, South Dakota's largest city.

The history of Minnehaha County is closely tied to the history of the Sioux tribe who lived in the region before European settlers arrived. The first European explorer to possibly visit the area was Frenchman Pierre Gaultier de Varennes, Sieur de La Verendrye in 1743. However, the region was predominantly inhabited by Native Americans until the 1800s when more European settlers began to arrive.

In 1851, the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux was signed, which opened up the lands of southeastern South Dakota for European settlement. The first direct European settlement in the area didn't occur until 1856 when brothers Jesse and Gideon Pond established a mission and school in the area. The county's agricultural and mining industries began to develop in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Throughout the 20th century, Minnehaha County continued to grow and expand, with Sioux Falls becoming the region's primary economic, cultural, and political hub. Today, Minnehaha County is a thriving region in South Dakota, and it plays a critical role in the state's economy, industry, and tourism.

Fun fact: Minnehaha County is home to the USS South Dakota (BB-57) Battleship Memorial, a unique museum located in Sioux Falls, which honors the most decorated battleship of World War II, the USS South Dakota. Visitors can explore a concrete outline of the ship, artifacts, and historical exhibits, making for an interesting and educational experience.
