Roberts County is located in the northeastern part of South Dakota and was officially established on March 1, 1883. It covers an area of approximately 1,101 square miles and is named after Solomon Roberts, a local land surveyor, and legislator in the Dakota Territory. The county seat is Sisseton, which was named after the Sisseton division of the Sioux tribe, who originally inhabited this land.

The region was originally home to Native Americans, specifically the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate, a division of the Sioux tribe. The area's fertile soil and plentiful prairies attracted European settlers in the late 19th century, predominantly Scandinavians, who settled down to build farms and cultivate the land.

The establishment of the railroad in the late 1800s allowed the development of businesses and a strong agricultural economy. The region primarily thrived on farming and raising livestock, and during the early 20th century, Roberts County became a hub for flax, wheat, and barley production.

Today, the county remains predominantly agricultural with an emphasis on corn, soybeans, and cattle. The tribal presence within the county remains strong, with a large portion of the county being a part of the Lake Traverse Indian Reservation.

Fun Fact: Along with its rich agricultural and Native American history, Roberts County is home to a unique attraction called Nicollet Tower. The 75-foot tall observation tower, located in Sisseton, offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. It is named after French explorer and cartographer Joseph Nicollet, who mapped the region in the 1800s, and serves as a tribute to the early explorers and pioneers of the area.
