Stanley County is located in the state of South Dakota, USA, and was established on January 8, 1873. Named after David S. Stanley, a U.S. Army general and Medal of Honor recipient, the county originally included parts of present-day Lyman, Hughes, Sully, Jones, and Mellette counties. In 1890, the county boundaries were reorganized to their current configuration, and the area partly evolved from being a small trading post named Fort Pierre in 1831.

Fort Pierre, the county seat of Stanley County, has a rich historical background, as it served as a hub for fur trade along the Missouri River. The Lewis and Clark Expedition also passed through this region in 1804, making it an essential locale in American history.

One fun fact about Stanley County is that it lies along the route of the Fort Pierre to Deadwood Trail, which was used during the 19th century to transport gold-seekers, miners, and merchants from Fort Pierre to the gold mines of the Black Hills. This historical trail saw substantial activity from 1876 to 1908 and carried millions of dollars' worth of gold. Today, the trail serves as a historical landmark and attracts tourists interested in the Gold Rush era.
