Sully County, located in the great state of South Dakota, was established on January 8, 1873. It was named in honor of General Alfred Sully, who was known for his efforts in managing Indian affairs and leading military expeditions during the American Civil War and the Indian Wars on the northern Great Plains.

The land of the present-day Sully County was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, particularly the Sioux tribe. With the onset of European settlement and the westward expansion of the United States, conflicts arose between the settlers and the Native Americans. General Alfred Sully played a significant role in maintaining peace and order during this period.

Sully County has a rich agricultural history and its economy is primarily based on agriculture, including the cultivation of crops such as corn, wheat, and soybeans, and raising livestock like cattle and sheep. The county seat and largest city is Onida, which is derived from the Sioux word "oh-ne-dah," meaning "the place of many adversaries."

One fun fact about Sully County is that it is home to the famous "Sully Buttes," a distinct pair of flat-topped hills located near the center of the county. Rising more than 1,000 feet above the surrounding landscape, these buttes are a prominent landmark and offer panoramic views of the Great Plains for those who hike to their summits.
