Todd County is located in the south-central part of the state of South Dakota. It was created in 1909 and named after John Blair Smith Todd, a delegate to the US Congress from Dakota Territory, and a Union General during the American Civil War. Todd County is entirely within the Rosebud Indian Reservation, which is the home of the Sicangu Oyate, also known as the Brule Lakota, a branch of the Sioux. The reservation was established by the United States in the 1800s as part of several treaties with the Sioux.

Todd County remains largely rural and agricultural, with a population of around 10,000 residents as of 2020. The county's economy relies heavily on farming and ranching activities, as well as some small-scale manufacturing and retail industries.

One fun fact about Todd County is that it is the birthplace of professional basketball player, Mike 'Sugar' Long (Michael Schumacher Long) who was born on October 23, 1947, in Mission, South Dakota. He played for multiple NBA teams, including the New York Knicks, Atlanta Hawks, and Kansas City Kings during the 1970s.
