Tripp County, located in the great state of South Dakota, was created in 1896 and officially organized in 1909. Named after lawyer, politician, and judge Bartlett Tripp, the county encompasses an area of 1,618 square miles in the south-central part of the state. Its county seat is Winner, which is also its largest city.

The county's early history was influenced by its location along the historically important trade route, the Niobrara River. The land was initially inhabited by the Ponca and Brule Native American tribes, until the arrival of European settlers in the 19th century. Homesteaders began to claim land in the area starting in the 1880s, and the growth of the agricultural industry contributed to the development of the county.

In 1909, the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul, and Pacific Railroad extended its tracks through the county, enabling better access to the region and further promoting economic growth. Industries including livestock, farming, and ranching continue to be important contributors to Tripp County's economy today.

Here's a fun fact about Tripp County: In 1960, the Keya Paha River, located in the northern part of the county, was home to the construction of the Winner-2 Satellite Communications Site. This Cold War military installation was part of the Air Force's operation called "Cannon Ball" and helped provide essential communications links during that period.
