Union County is located in the southeastern corner of the great state of South Dakota. It was originally created in 1862 by the territorial legislature but did not actually become organized until 1864. Its name is derived from the Unionist sentiment shared by those living within its boundaries during the American Civil War.

The county seat is Elk Point, which was the first permanent settlement in the Dakota Territory as well as the starting point of the Corps of Discovery led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark in 1804. Union County's landscape is dominated by rolling hills with fertile farmland, although part of the Missouri River runs along its southern border.

One significant fun fact about Union County in South Dakota is that it is home to two South Dakota State Parks: Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve, and the Union Grove State Park. The Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve is a historical park that features restored and preserved buildings from the 1800s, offering a glimpse into life during that time. Union Grove State Park, on the other hand, provides various recreational activities, including hiking, camping, and bird-watching, allowing visitors to enjoy the natural beauty of the region.
