Carter County, located in the great state of Tennessee, is steeped in history and natural beauty. Established in 1796, the same year Tennessee became a state, Carter County was named after Colonel Landon Carter, who was the son of John Carter, a prominent early settler of the region. Covering an area of 348 square miles, Carter County lies in the northeastern part of the state, adjacent to the border with North Carolina.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, this region gained importance through its thriving iron industry. The Doe River, which runs through the middle of Carter County, provided the water power required for iron production, making the area a hub for industrial activities.

One notable historical site in the county is the Sycamore Shoals. This area played a crucial role during the early settlement days when pioneers, led by Daniel Boone, crossed the Watauga River on their way to the Cumberland Gap and into the Kentucky wilderness. The Sycamore Shoals was also the location of the 1772 signing of the Watauga Association, which was the first written constitution of a self-governing territory in the American colonies. Additionally, the region witnessed the gathering of the Overmountain Men, who then went on to defeat the British at the Battle of Kings Mountain in 1780 during the Revolutionary War.

A fun fact about Carter County is that it is home to Roan Mountain State Park, a popular destination for tourists who come to see the stunning views of the Appalachian Mountains. The park features the world's largest natural rhododendron gardens, which bloom every year in mid to late June, attracting thousands of visitors for the Roan Mountain Rhododendron Festival.
