DeKalb County, located in the great state of Tennessee, was established on December 2, 1837. It was formed from pieces of land from Cannon County, Warren County, and White County. Named after Johann de Kalb, a European-born general who fought alongside the Americans in the Revolutionary War, DeKalb County consists of rolling hills and fertile farmland, making agriculture one of its significant economic activities.

Smithville, the county seat, was founded in 1838, and the town quickly became a center for the area's commercial activities. The region played a role in the Civil War, with several skirmishes between Union and Confederate forces taking place within its borders. The county's prime location near the Caney Fork River fostered continuous growth in trade and commerce after the Civil War, mainly through steamboats and the railroad systems that connected the region to the rest of the state and, ultimately, the country.

Today, DeKalb County retains much of its rural charm and historical character. Visitors to the area can explore an abundance of natural attractions like Edgar Evins State Park and Center Hill Lake, as well as numerous camping, fishing, and outdoor recreation opportunities.

A fun fact about DeKalb County is its reputation for hosting the annual Smithville Fiddlers' Jamboree, a celebrated musical event that attracts participants and audiences from all over the United States. Established in 1972, the festival features traditional bluegrass and old-time Appalachian music and dance performances, keeping the regional culture and musical heritage alive and thriving.
