Fayette County is located in the great state of Tennessee and was established on September 29, 1824. It was named in honor of Marquis de Lafayette, a French hero of the American Revolution. Fayette County is part of the Memphis Metropolitan Statistical Area and is situated in the western part of the state. The county's land area is predominantly rural, with rolling hills, and features diverse ecosystems, including forests and swamps.

The early economy of the county was largely driven by agriculture, with cash crops such as corn, wheat, cotton, and tobacco being farmed by both yeoman farmers and on larger plantations. By the mid-1800s, the county became prosperous due to the cotton boom, and it continued to thrive for much of the 19th century.

During the Civil War, Fayette County residents were divided in both their loyalties and their politics. While some residents sympathized with the Confederate cause, others pushed for the end of slavery and support for the Union. The county experienced significant social and economic changes after the war, as newly freed slaves started new lives, and the economy shifted towards more diversified farming practices.

Fun Fact: Fayette County is home to the Ames Plantation, a historical site that hosts the annual Ames Plantation Heritage Festival. This popular event features traditional Southern culture, crafts, and educational exhibits, giving visitors a glimpse into life in the region during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
