Giles County, Tennessee
.Giles County, located in the southern part of Tennessee, was established on November 14th, 1809. It was named in honor of William Branch Giles, a Senator from Virginia, who went on to serve as the Governor of Virginia from 1827 to 1830. William Branch Giles had supported Tennessee's restrictive position on new settlers' land titles and was an advocate for statehood. The legislation for the establishment of Giles County was signed by Samuel Lewis, then speaker of the Tennessee House of Representatives.
Pulaski, the county seat, was founded in 1809 and was named after Casimir Pulaski, a Polish soldier that fought for the United States' independence. The county covers about 611 square miles and neighbors several other counties in Tennessee, including Lawrence, Maury, Marshall, and Lincoln.
Throughout its history, Giles County has been known primarily for its agricultural industry, especially in the cotton and tobacco sectors. Along with a strong history of agriculture, the region witnessed significant impact during the Civil War, with numerous skirmishes and battles taking place in the county.
One fun fact about Giles County is that it is home to the nationally recognized Milky Way Farm, a large estate built by Frank Mars, the founder of Mars Candy Company. Frank Mars built the farm in 1930 and aimed to create a self-sustaining dairy farming operation. Today, the farm is a popular tourist attraction, offering guided tours, hiking trails, and several events throughout the year.
