Hawkins County, situated in the great state of Tennessee, was established on January 6, 1787, by an act of the North Carolina General Assembly. Named after Benjamin Hawkins, a prominent political leader in the state who also served on the U.S. Senate from 1796 - 1813, the county was originally a part of the larger Sullivan County within North Carolina, but after Tennessee achieved statehood in 1796, Hawkins County joined the newly-formed state.

Rich in history, Hawkins County has witnessed many important events throughout its existence, including the Battle of Kingsport during the American Revolutionary War. During this time, the county also played a significant role in the development of the surrounding region, with economically vital industries such as manufacturing, agriculture, and trade.

Hawkins County boasts a variety of historical landmarks, one of which is the Rogersville Historic District, where you can find the oldest courthouse in Tennessee, built-in 1836. Another notable site is the Netherland Inn, a restored 19th-century inn and tavern that served as a stagecoach and boat stop along the Holston River.

A fun fact about Hawkins County is that it is home to the Pressmen's Home, a 3,000-acre site established in 1911 by the International Printing Pressmen and Assistants' Union of North America. The Pressmen's Home had a training facility, golf course, medical clinic, and even a zoo, all aimed at providing supportive services for union members in the printing industry.
