Humphreys County is located in the state of Tennessee, USA, and was established in 1809. It was named after Parry Wayne Humphreys, a prominent local judge and U.S. Congressman. The county seat is Waverly, which was established in 1826.

The area that is now Humphreys County was once inhabited by the Chickasaw Indian tribe before white settlers began moving in during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In the 1790s, Lick Creek served as a temporary settlement before being subsequently abandoned. During the 19th century, agriculture played a major role in the local economy, with the production of corn, tobacco, and cotton being the primary focus.

The county was significantly impacted by the Civil War, and several skirmishes occurred within its borders. One notable battle was the Battle of Johnsonville, which occurred in November 1864 when Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked Johnsonville, resulting in substantial damage to the town and the Union supply depot there. Today, Johnsonville is a state park and historical site.

Humphreys County experienced a progression of transportation developments throughout the years. The Tennessee River served as one of the primary transportation routes before the development of the railroad. The Nashville and Northwestern Railroad was completed in 1860, followed by the L & N Railroad in the 1870s, facilitating better connectivity and economic development in the county.

A fun fact about Humphreys County is that it is home to Loretta Lynn's Ranch, a popular tourist attraction. Loretta Lynn, a country music legend, has her roots in Tennessee, and her 3,000-acre ranch and home are open to the public for tours and events, including concerts, camping, cabin rentals, and the annual Tennessee Motorcycles and Music Revival.
