Lake County is located in the northwestern corner of the U.S. state of Tennessee and is part of the Great Mississippi River Valley. It was established on June 24, 1870, and was named for the Reelfoot Lake, a natural body of water formed during the 1811-1812 New Madrid earthquakes. The county seat is Tiptonville.

Before the region was formed as Lake County, Native Americans, particularly the Chickasaw tribe, inhabited the area. Following the arrival of European settlers in the 18th and 19th centuries, agriculture became the primary industry in the area.

During the Civil War, several confrontations occurred in the area which was divided in loyalty between the Union and the Confederacy. Island No. 10, a strategic stronghold for the Confederates, located near the county, was the site of an intense bombardment and siege in 1862 until its eventual capture by the Union forces.

One fun fact about Lake County involves the Reelfoot Lake, which is not only a key geographical feature of the region but also home to a wide array of wildlife, including bald eagles. The lake, formed as a result of the New Madrid earthquakes, provides an opportunity for several recreational activities like boating, fishing, and bird watching. Every year, thousands of tourists flock to the county to attend the Reelfoot Eagle Festival, which celebrates the majestic American bald eagle and its habitat within this unique lake ecosystem.
