Lawrence County is located in the southern part of Tennessee and was established on October 21, 1817, named in honor of Captain James Lawrence, a War of 1812 hero. It was created from parts of Hickman and Giles counties as a part of the Chickasaw Purchase. The county seat is Lawrenceburg, which was founded in 1819 by Samuel Mayes, a veteran of the Creek War, and was named after James Lawrence.

In the early years, the economy of Lawrence County was primarily agricultural, focusing on the cultivation of corn, wheat, tobacco, and cotton. The extraction of iron ore also played a significant role in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The rich natural resources of the region contributed to the establishment of industry in the area.

One of the most famous residents of Lawrence County was David "Davy" Crockett, an American frontiersman, soldier, and politician. Crockett was born in neighboring Limestone County, but he moved to Lawrence County in 1817 and served as a justice of the peace, a colonel of the militia, and a state representative. He later represented Tennessee in the U.S. House of Representatives before perishing in the Battle of the Alamo in Texas.

A fun fact about Lawrence County is that it hosts the annual "David Crockett Days" festival, which celebrates the life and legacy of the famous frontiersman. This event takes place in August and includes historical reenactments, music, food, and other family-friendly entertainments to pay tribute to Lawrence County's most famous resident.
