Lewis County is located in the southern part of the great state of Tennessee. It was established on December 23, 1843, and was named in honor of Meriwether Lewis, a famed explorer and naturalist who was a part of the Lewis and Clark expedition. The county seat and largest city in Lewis County is Hohenwald, which was incorporated in 1911.

Originally inhabited by Native American tribes, the area was later claimed by European settlers, with significant migration to this region occurring in the early 19th century. The land was primarily used for farming, timber, and the extraction of natural resources, which helped support early settlers and continue to drive the local economy today.

Lewis County played a minor role in the American Civil War, as the area experienced occasional skirmishes between Union and Confederate forces. However, it was spared from significant battles or devastation. After the Civil War, the county experienced steady growth and development, including the establishment of the Nashville, Chattanooga, and St. Louis Railway in the late 1800s, which connected Hohenwald to other cities and boosted local commerce.

Today, Lewis County remains a mostly rural area, known for its picturesque landscapes, friendly communities, and vibrant local culture. The Natchez Trace Parkway, a 444-mile long recreational road and scenic drive through the states of Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee, passes through the county and serves as a popular attraction for both residents and visitors alike.

One fun fact about this region is that Hohenwald is home to The Elephant Sanctuary, the largest natural habitat refuge for endangered African and Asian elephants in the United States. Established in 1995, the sanctuary spans over 2,700 acres and provides a safe haven for retired circus and zoo elephants to live out the rest of their lives in peace and comfort.
