Macon County is a small county located in the northern region of the great state of Tennessee. It was formed on January 18, 1842, from parts of Smith and Sumner Counties. Macon County is rich in history and natural beauty. It played a significant role during the Civil War, with skirmishes and engagements occurring within its present boundaries. The Battle of Red Boiling Springs in August 1862 was one such significant event, where Confederate forces clashed with Union troops. The Civil War disrupted the lives of its residents, but it also served to establish the county as a significant transportation hub for the region.

The county seat, Lafayette, was named after the famous French general and American Revolutionary War hero, Marquis de Lafayette. It was incorporated in 1844 and has served as the administrative center of the region ever since. Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Macon County evolved from a largely agrarian society to a diverse, modern community. Its economy has included agriculture, timber, and manufacturing, among other industries.
