McMinn County, located in the great state of Tennessee, was established on November 5, 1819. It was named in honor of Joseph McMinn, who was a member of the territorial legislature, speaker of the state senate, and eventually became the Governor of Tennessee (1815-1821). The county is situated in the southeastern part of the state, covering an area of approximately 432 square miles.

Historically, McMinn County played a role in the Cherokee Removal, commonly known as the Trail of Tears, during the 1830s. The county was part of the route traveled by many Cherokee people as they were forcibly removed from their ancestral lands to settle in present-day Oklahoma.

Its county seat is Athens, which was founded in 1822 and later incorporated in 1850. Athens serves as an industrial, educational, and commercial center for the county. Some notable industries throughout the county's history have included agriculture, textiles, and food processing.

A fun fact about McMinn County is that it is home to the world's largest underground lake, The Lost Sea. Located in Sweetwater, this natural wonder is a Registered National Landmark and is part of the extensive underground cavern system known as Craighead Caverns. Visitors can explore the intriguing geological formations and even take a glass-bottom boat tour on the vast subterranean lake.
