Meigs County is a small but historically rich county located in the southeastern region of the great state of Tennessee. Established on January 20, 1836, the county was named in honor of Return Jonathan Meigs Jr., a distinguished soldier, judge, and politician who served the United States in various capacities, including as the 3rd U.S. Postmaster General.

The county was carved out of the Cherokee and Chickamauga lands that were ceded after the Treaty of Tellico in 1805, and it created from portions of both Rhea and McMinn counties. Over the years, agriculture, lumber, and mining played key roles in the development of the Meigs County economy. With the beautiful Tennessee River and the Watts Bar Lake area, the county boasts rich flora and fauna, offering numerous recreational opportunities to those who live and visit there.

During the American Civil War, Meigs County found itself at a bit of a crossroads, since its citizens were divided in their loyalties between the Union and the Confederacy. Being so close to the Tennessee River, the county often found itself in the midst of conflict.

One fun fact about Meigs County is that it's home to the Bowater Southern Paper Corporation, the largest newsprint mill in North America at the time of its construction in 1954. Additionally, the Watts Bar Dam, a United States landmark completed in 1942, is partly located in Meigs County, providing hydroelectric power and flood control to the region.
