Monroe County, located in the great state of Tennessee was established on November 13, 1819. It was formed from parts of the neighboring counties, McMinn and Roane. The county was named in honor of the fifth President of the United States, James Monroe, who served from 1817 to 1825. The picturesque county lies along the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in the southeastern part of Tennessee and spans 653 square miles. The county seat is situated in Madisonville, while some other major towns within the county include Sweetwater and Tellico Plains.

Monroe County's rich history includes a significant Cherokee Native American population known as the Overhill Cherokee, who originally inhabited the area before European settlers arrived. The Tellico River played a prominent role in the region's development as the Cherokee trading path called the Great Indian Warpath ran parallel to it. Additionally, the county was the site of the Tellico Blockhouse established in 1794, which served as an American military outpost and a place where trading between the Cherokee and the American settlers took place.

The 1830s marked a shift in the cultural landscape in Monroe County when the Indian Removal Act led to a forced relocation of the Cherokee, resulting in the tragic Trail of Tears. Subsequently, European settlers began to establish communities throughout the region.

As a fun fact: Monroe County is home to the Lost Sea, situated in Sweetwater. This underground lake is part of Craighead Caverns and is known as one of the largest underground lakes in the United States. Visitors from near and far come to explore its mysterious depths on guided tours, making it a must-see destination in Monroe County.
