Obion County, located in the northwestern corner of the great state of Tennessee, was established on October 24, 1823. The county is named after the Obion River, which runs through the area and is a tributary of the Mississippi River. The river's name is believed to be derived from the American Indian word "Euphiona," which means "good disposition" or "good man."

Initially inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Chickasaw, Obion County saw an influx of European settlers in the early 1800s. The county's rich agricultural land, particularly for cotton and other cash crops, contributed to its growth and development. The county seat, Union City, was incorporated in 1852 and rapidly developed with the arrival of the railroad in the mid-19th century.

During the Civil War, Obion County saw a mix of Confederate and Union sympathies among its residents, and the region witnessed some skirmishes and raids. Following the war and into the 20th century, the county continued to develop as an agricultural center with an expanding economy that diversified into manufacturing and service industries.

One fun fact about Obion County is that it is home to Discovery Park of America, a 50-acre educational museum and heritage park showcasing an extensive collection of artifacts and interactive exhibits on subjects like science, history, and the arts. Visitors can explore everything from a life-size replica of an early human dwelling to a working 19th-century gristmill.
