Overton County is located in the great state of Tennessee and was established on September 12, 1806. It was named in honor of John Overton, a prominent lawyer, judge, and politician in early Tennessee history. The county seat, Livingston, is named after Edward Livingston, a prominent American jurist, and statesman.

Overton County is situated on the eastern edge of the Highland Rim, a physiographic region characterized by elevated terrain and part of the larger Nashville Basin. It is bordered by the counties of Pickett, Fentress, Putnam, Clay, and Jackson.

In its early history, Overton County was primarily an agricultural area, with settlers cultivating many different crops. The population was mostly of Scotch-Irish descent, who brought their traditions and culture with them to the region. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Overton County would adapt to the changing landscape of American economic and social life.

Today, Overton County covers an area of approximately 435 square miles and has a population of around 22,000 people (as of a 2019 estimate). It is still heavily influenced by its agricultural roots, with farming playing an essential role in the local economy.

Fun Fact: Overton County is home to a unique natural formation called the "Standing Stone." The Standing Stone is a large rock, approximately 12 feet high, that appears to have been deliberately placed on top of another rock. It is now part of a local park, the Standing Stone State Park, and holds a yearly celebration-The Standing Stone Day Festival-which celebrates the County's rich history and heritage.
