Rhea County is located in the eastern Tennessee region of the United States. It was established on November 3, 1807, as the state's 34th county, named after Jacob Rhea, an American Revolutionary War officer and a member of the Tennessee General Assembly. The county is no stranger to historical events, playing a significant role in the Trail of Tears, in which thousands of Cherokee people were forcibly removed from their homeland by the US federal government in the 1830s.

The county seat of Rhea is in Dayton. The region has witnessed economic growth due to the construction of several railroads in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, promoting industrial and agricultural development. Rhea County has also been involved in the production of coal, iron, and textiles, and it was once a leading strawberry distributor in the early 1900s.

One fun fact about Rhea County is that it was home to the famous Scopes Trial in 1925, which took place in the Rhea County Courthouse in Dayton. High school science teacher John Scopes was put on trial for teaching evolution in a state-funded school, which violated Tennessee's Butler Act. This highly-publicized legal battle, known as the "Monkey Trial," put the conflict between religious fundamentalism and evolution at the center of the American culture war. The case eventually resulted in Scopes' conviction and sparked discussions and debates that continue today.
