Rutherford County, located in the great state of Tennessee, was established on October 25, 1803, as a part of the act of the Tennessee General Assembly. Named in honor of Major General Griffith Rutherford, a prominent military officer during the American Revolutionary War, the county lies at the geographical center of Tennessee. Murfreesboro, its largest city, serves as the county seat and also held the title of state capital of Tennessee between 1818 and 1826 before it was moved back to Nashville.

The area was home to various Native American tribes before the arrival of European settlers, including the Cherokee, Chickasaw, and Shawnee tribes. The land was later transferred to the United States government as part of the Treaty of Holston in 1791. Rutherford County has a rich agricultural history, with cotton being the primary crop during the early years.

By the mid-19th century, Rutherford County had become an important location during the American Civil War. The Battle of Stones River, fought between December 31, 1862, and January 2, 1863, took place near Murfreesboro and was a significant event in the war. The Stones River National Battlefield now commemorates this significant battle and serves as a popular tourist destination in the area.

One fun fact about Rutherford County is that it is home to the geographical center of the state of Tennessee. The actual center of the state is marked by a small monument located in Murfreesboro, making it an interesting place for visitors to see and take photos.
