Smith County, in the great state of Tennessee, has a rich historical background. It was officially established on October 26, 1799, making it one of the earliest counties in the state. The county was named in honor of Daniel Smith, a Revolutionary War veteran, a U.S. Senator, and former Secretary of State for Tennessee. The county seat, Carthage, was established in the early 1800s and played an essential role in the development of the region.

In the 19th century, the main economic drivers in Smith County were agriculture, particularly the cultivation of corn, tobacco, and other traditional crops, and the rich iron ore deposits found in the region, which fueled the iron industry. The county was also home to various water mills that processed flour and timber.

During the Civil War, Smith County saw numerous skirmishes and military movements due to its strategic location near the Cumberland River. Carthage, located at the confluence of the Caney Fork River and Cumberland River, was occupied by the Union Army in 1863, making it a critical supply point throughout the war.

A fun fact about Smith County is that it has an unusual geographical claim to fame. The county is divided into two separate sections by the Caney Fork River, which forms a sort of "island" around one segment of the county. This unique geographical feature makes Smith County one of the few places in the United States where you can stand in one county and throw a stone into two others - DeKalb and Wilson counties - from the same point.
