Sullivan County, located in the northeastern part of the great state of Tennessee, was established in 1779, making it the second oldest county in the state. It was named in honor of John Sullivan, a Revolutionary War general who played a significant role in the development of the region. Its county seat, Blountville, was chosen because it was the geographical center of the county.

Sullivan County's rich history includes significant events such as the Battle of Kings Mountain in 1780, a turning point in the American Revolution that resulted in a major victory for the Patriots. Over time, the county expanded to include several prosperous cities, such as Kingsport and Bristol.

One distinctive feature of Sullivan County is the Bristol Motor Speedway, which is located partly in the city of Bristol, Tennessee, and partly in Bristol, Virginia. This famous NASCAR racetrack has a 0.533-mile concrete oval with a unique layout and steep banking, earning the nickname "The Last Great Colosseum." The Speedway has a seating capacity of 162,000 spectators, making it one of the largest sports venues in the United States.
