Weakley County, Tennessee, located in the northwestern region of the state, was established on October 21, 1823, and named in honor of Colonel Robert Weakley, an early settler and prominent political figure. The county was formed from land ceded by the Chickasaw Indians in the Treaty of 1818. The region is dominated by gently rolling hills, farmland, forests, and picturesque landscapes, which forms part of the Mississippi Embayment part of the Gulf Coastal Plain.

The county seat, Dresden, was founded in 1825 and named after a city in Germany. Agriculture played a significant role in the county's development, which led to the growth of the cotton and tobacco industries. In the 20th century, agriculture diversified, and soybeans and corn became the primary crops grown in the county.

An important event in Weakley County's history is that the University of Tennessee at Martin was established in 1900 as a teacher training college, known as "Hall-Moody Institute." This institution later became the University of Tennessee Junior College in 1927 and eventually became a known part of the University of Tennessee System in 1967.

One fun fact about Weakley County is that each year, the county hosts the Tennessee Soybean Festival in its largest city, Martin, to celebrate the region's agricultural heritage. The festival features live music, educational exhibits, food vendors, parades, art displays, and other family-friendly activities.
