Established officially on October 26, 1799, Wilson County was named in honor of Major David Wilson, a prominent figure in Revolutionary War-era North Carolina, though he did not actually reside in Tennessee. The county was formed from portions of Sumner County and the now-defunct Tennessee County.
Lebanon, the largest city in Wilson County, serves as the county seat. Other notable cities in the area include Mt. Juliet and Watertown.
