Armstrong County, located in the great state of Texas, was established on August 21, 1876, and was organized on April 11, 1890. Named after one of the early settlers in Texas, Robert Armstrong, the county played a significant role in the history of the Lone Star State. Nestled within the Texas Panhandle region, Armstrong County encompasses an area of roughly 914 square miles.

The region was first inhabited by various Native American tribes such as the Comanche, Kiowa, and Apache. European exploration in the area began in the 16th century with the Coronado expedition. Later, in the 19th century, American cattle ranchers started moving in, attracted by the rich grazing lands. The JA Ranch, established in the 1870s by John Adair and Charles Goodnight, was the first cattle ranch in the county and covered over a million acres across several counties.

The county seat and the largest town in Armstrong County is Claude. In the early days, the town served as a vital transportation hub, thanks to its proximity to several stagecoach trails and railroad lines. The arrival of the Fort Worth and Denver Railway in 1887 further spurred growth in Claude and the surrounding region.

One fun fact about Armstrong County is that it is home to the renowned Palo Duro Canyon State Park, the second-largest canyon system in the United States after the Grand Canyon. The canyon stretches 120 miles long, with a width of 6 to 20 miles and a depth of more than 800 feet. It is known for its stunning geological formations, abundant wildlife, and colorful history, making it a popular tourist attraction in Texas.
